ATLANTA – While the official record will show SCAD Atlanta men's tennis at 1-0 after their resounding victory over Union College (9-0), the most impressive victory of the young season came on Sunday morning during a scrimmage against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC).
Coming into the match ranked 7th nationally in the NJCAA, ABAC found the Bees to be more than they could handle. Riding the courageous play of
Julian Guzman, the Bees made ABAC's drive back to Tifton, Georgia a little bit longer as they walked away with a 6-3 victory.
The Bees jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after doubles.
Joseph Dwyer teamed with
Chandler Saunders to down ABAC's duo of Parker Cuevas-Woodall and Jonah Jakubec 8-6. The Bees' #3 doubles team of
Taka Imoto and Julian Guzman bested ABAC's pair of Michael Bailey and Nate Palmer 9-8 (4).
In singles, Guzman battled through muscle cramping to defeat Jakubec 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. SCAD Atlanta teammate, Joseph Dwyer, battled ABAC's Corey Smith to a 6-4, 7-6 (6) victory. Newcomer Kyle Craig bested ABAC's Michael Bailey 6-3, 6-3 at the #6 position.
"ABAC is a strong team so it was fantastic to see the men fight through and get the win," beamed Coach Glen Hill. "I was particularly impressed with our play under pressure today. The men showed focus and determination and I'm truly excited to see them build on this win as we progress further into the season. Perhaps most impressive was Julian Guzman's win at #2 singles, where he overcame cramping to win 7-5 in the third set."
The Bees return to the hard courts on Tuesday, February 18th as they travel to Emory to take on the Eagles.
