Atlantic City, New Jers. -- SCAD Fencing opened their season this past weekend at the North American Cup. The field for both the men's and women's competitions was large, with over 400 participants in events.  

The field in each event was divided into pools, in order for competitors to receive a solid seeding going into the direct elimination round. In the pool rounds, there are 5-7 people fencing each other. The goal is to score five points before your opponent. The goal of the pool rounds is to win as many bouts as possible, ultimately leading to a better seeding going into the direct elimination rounds.  

In the direct elimination rounds, fencers are placed into a single-elimination bracket. Fencers compete in head-to-head bouts, with the loser being eliminated. The final bout in the direct elimination brackets determines the winner of the entire event. The goal of the direct elimination rounds is to score 15 points before the other fencer or the time expires.
