SCAD Cycling Takes on the Southern Cross 50 mile Gravel Race

3/6/2025 4:00:00 PM

QUICK LAP:  The SCAD Atlanta Collegiate Cycling team lined up with professionals and amateurs to take on the 50 mile gravel race track in the North Georgia Mountains. The trail consisted of climbing and descending the 5,500ft mountainside with conditions of loose rock/gravel. The rocky sections on deserts made for a lot of flat tires causing the bees to lose valuable time and positions and conditions continued to worsen as wind speeds picked up nearing the end of the race.

From the men's team, Gabriel Payne finished 12th in pro/open men, Samuel Mayer in 31st pro/open men, and Emmett Cult in 40th. For the women's team Maria Doering finished 6th and Danica Lee in 10th. On the collegiate podium, Maria finished in 3rd and Gabe finished 7th.

TEAM OUTCOMES: There with 58 open category athletes- our top performance was Maria Doering in 3rd in Collegiate Women.

INDIVIDUAL SCORES:
  • Gabriel Payne (Austin, Tex. / Industrial Design) finished 12th in pro/open men, 7th in College.
  • Sam Mayer (Franklin, Tenn. / Advertising & Branding) in 31st pro/open men, 15th in collegiate.
  • Maria Döring (Groβschönau, Germany / Creative Business Leadership) in 3rd in Collegiate Women 6th overall
