Atlanta, Ga. - The Cumberland University Phoenix women's tennis team traveled to play SCAD Atlanta on Friday. The #19 ranked Bees were looking for their first win of the season after a tough opening stretch of matches against strong opponents. Coming fresh off a match against Emory University, the SCAD team looked to have settled into competition play with an impressive performance.

The Bees showed their mettle early on, taking a quick lead in all three doubles points. Despite needing to win only two of the three contested doubles to earn the lone doubles point, the SCAD women kept their foot on the gas in all three matches. First done were the #2 pairing of Begoña Benjumeda and Vivian Amaro - who have lost only one match so far this year - with a 6-1 victory. They were quickly followed by the #3 pair of Nadia Brunzlow and Karina Limyadi, who won by a 6-2 scoreline. Simran Kejriwal and Katrina De Guzman finished the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win at #1 doubles.

Leading 1-0 in the match score, the Bees kept up the pressure in the singles. Karina Limyadi cruised to a swift 6-2, 6-1 win at #5 singles to put the team up 2-0. Nadia Brunzlow's 6-1, 6-3 victory at #3 singles extended the lead, putting SCAD within a single match win of victory. The Phoenix were not without some fight however. Wins for Cumberland at #1 and #2 singles brought them to within a point of the SCAD team. Begoña Benjumeda toughed out a close second set to win at #3 singles 6-1, 7-5 to clinch the win for SCAD. Showing her typical fighting spirit, Madelyn Homan clawed her way back after dropping her first set 6-1. Winning the second, she continued her comeback in the ten point tiebreaker to win at #6 singles 1-6, 6-4, (10-5). The victory put the Bees up 5-2 on the day.

With the win, the SCAD team moves to 1-3-1 on the year. With some of their toughest matches for the season already behind them, they will try to build momentum against Florida National University at home on Sunday.
