Atlanta, Ga. - The Cyclocross season kicked off with a bang for the Bees at the PyschoCross event on their home turf. Hosted at the Dick Lane Velodrome, the wet weather was no deterrent to the SCAD riders who made a strong showing in their first race of the season. The course wove through the woods and field surrounding the track, featuring several steep uphills and downhills. With the conditions wet and muddy, it was a harrowing ride at times for the competitors as the races wore on.
In the women's race, SCAD Atlanta's Anna Christian took off from the gun and never looked back. In spite of crashing twice, Christian was able to secure the win. Fellow Bee Gabrielle Lehnert also came off her bike on the final lap, but was able to recover for second place. SCAD Savannah's Maddy Smith finished in third.
On the men's side Denzel Stephenson (SCAD Atlanta) was giving Andrew Sparks (SCAD Savannah) a run for his money when he got a flat tire. Teammate Jacob Morales surrendered his wheel to Denzel and sat the rest of the race out. Once back in the race, Stephenson contended with the course as well as his fellow riders. Despite plowing through the yellow tape in one portion, he closed the distance for third place. Second was SCAD Atlanta's Georwill Perez, who was not quite able to overhaul first place finisher Sparks.
Coach Tina Pic exclaimed "I'm very excited to see everyone in such good form and ready to race with still a month left to train for nationals. Bring it on!!"
